Title: Community-driven Journey Facilitation App for Public Transport: Co-creation of Services
(Academic Lead: Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College London)
Only people aged 18 or over can use this service!
What is the purpose of this project?
This project develops a system that improves journey experience of public transport users by providing service arrival time information, whilst simultaneously collecting user feedback which will be used for service planning. The project is funded by Royal Academy of Engineering, United Kingdom (ref: FS-2425-22-132)
Prize Draw?
As long as you keep using the system, we will enter you to our prize draw.
· RM100 for the most frequent chatbot user every week (from Saturday to Friday) until 25 October 2025.
· RM500 for lottery for the whole project duration (all the users until 25 October 2025 are considered. More a person uses the chatbot, the more chance they will have to win)
· Winners will be contacted via Whatsapp or Telegram
Other important note
As long as you keep using this, we assume that you agree with participation in this project and our data processing policy until data deletion at the end of the retention period or upon your request).
What happens if I use this chatbot?
The chatbot will ask the bus route you would like to take and your location. When you answer a question, the chatbot will send your answer as well as your user ID and your location to system. This allows our system to identify the bus stop you are waiting at and the arrival times of bus services as well as traffic congestion and service reliability. Our arrival time calculation considers the current and historical service reliability data.
When you complete your journey, the chatbot asks you to rate your journey experience and, if you are not so happy, your reasons. The data will be processed to map user experience to services and locations.
Note that the data will also be used by university researchers in academic research to advance our knowledge in public transport journey experience. Aggregated and non-user-identifiable results would be published in academic journals and would be provided to transport operators, regulators and stakeholders to improve bus services.
Does the Chatbot run in the background?
No. This application is on a stateless and run on an on-demand basis, which is similar to text message services (SMS). The application will be off by default and when a user uses it, it gets activated.
Does the Chatbot constantly collecting GPS data?
No. The location data is collected only when a user answers a question on the chatbot. It is expected that a user uses our system at bus stops and on their bus journeys, not at their homes or offices.
How to stop using this application?
You can do so by simply not answering any to this chatbot. This bot is just like a person in your contact; if you don’t talk to it, it won’t do anything. To get rid of this, you can remove it from the contact list of your app (Whatsapp, Telegram).
Does this app install something to my mobile?
No. Your text message app (Whatsapp, Telegram) just remembers the system as one of your contacts.
Is there anything I need to install or register to use?
No installation or registration is required.
How would the data be handled?
We fully comply with Malaysia’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2010. The legal basis for processing your personal data is ‘Performance of a task in the public interest.’ The data will be originally stored in a cloud server in Malaysia rented by Greenetrix (our project member in Malaysia). The data (the server) may be accessed by the overseas researchers of our research consortium, including Mahidol University (Thailand), University College Cork (Ireland), University of New South Wales (Australia), Open University and University College London (United Kingdom). Any analysis would be conducted in a manner where passenger is unidentifiable and for the purposes of public transport service improvement only. All the people who access to the data would be required to receive a training by the Data Protection Officer (DPO) of Greenetrix and according to the PDPA.
How long would the data be retained?
The data will be kept for up to six (6) years from the date of collection. This duration allows PhD students to use the data for their research. After this period, your data will be deleted from all the countries/region involved.
Can I see what data is kept regarding me?
Please contact us at the below contact addresses. As we don’t know the names of the passengers, you would need to provide your user-ID of the app (Whatsapp, Telegram).
How can I request to delete my data?
Please contact us at the below contact addresses. As we don’t know the names of the passengers, you would need to provide your user-ID of the app (whatsapp, telegram). If you request data deletion within four weeks after data collection, we will delete your data. If you contact us after this period (i.e. four (4) weeks after data collection), we will delete your data where possible but if it is processed (e.g. data anonymisation, used for analysis, etc) we cannot guarantee complete data deletion of your data.
If you are concerned about how your personal data is being processed, or if you would like to contact us about your rights, please contact the below addresses. Our Privacy Policy can also be seen at https://transforming-public-mobility-workshop.greenetrix.com/privacy
